MPS Athletic Department Updates for 2018-19 School Year

What will be different in the 2018-19 School Year?

District Director Position

We are pleased to announce Antony Fisher as the new District Athletic Director for Minneapolis Public Schools. Mr. Fisher has served as Athletic Director at The Hope School (Milwaukee, WI), St. John Lutheran School (Ocala, FL), Oak Ridge High School (Orlando, FL) and Edgewater High School (Orlando, FL). With his strong passion for sports, Antony will be responsible for implementing recommendations from our recent Equity & Diversity Impact Assessment (EDIA), fundraising, strengthening our external and internal partnerships and supporting the school Athletic Directors.

Mr. Fisher has a Certified Master of Athletic Administration certificate from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). In addition, he has a Professional Educator Certification, Marketing Grades 6-12 from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Marketing Communication from the University of Wisconsin River Falls.

Mr. Fisher began with the district on September 17th

Ticket Price Adjustment – All High Schools

  • All staff members (HOME or AWAY), minus MSHSL playoff games, will be admitted free of charge by showing their staff ID badges and signing in on the gate log
  • All adult guests that attend with staff members will be required to pay a $6 admission fee excluding MSHSL playoff games
  • All adult guests will be required to pay a $6 admission fee excluding MSHSL playoff games
  • All adult guests that are considered senior citizens will be required to pay a $4 admission fee excluding MSHSL playoff games
  • Middle School and High School students from visiting schools should be charged a $4 admission fee excluding MSHSL playoff games
  • Middle School and High School students from the host school will be required to pay a $2 admission fee, while showing their MPS Student ID, excluding MSHSL playoff games
  • Student and/or children 7 years old and younger will be admitted free of charge minus MSHSL playoff games

Discount Cards are sold at all schools. Adult cards are $40 for 10 entrances. Students cards are $25 for 10 entrances.  

Special Promotional Events – Host Schools may select one “free” entrance event per sport for students enrolled at their school. These dates are selected by the school administration.

Middle School Athletics

  • Programming shifted to Community Education: Coed Soccer (Fall); Boys/Girls Basketball (Winter)

High School AD Job Restructure

  • High School ADs job restructured to 46 weeks (from 52 weeks)
  • High School ADs report to High School Principal and work in collaboration with District Athletic Office

2018-19 Winter Registration

  • Register at Host High Schools (Edison, Henry, North, Roosevelt, South, Southwest, Washburn)
  • October 30th Winter Coaches In-Service @ Davis Center 4:00 p.m.

Participation Fee Increase

  • Hockey - $240 (increase will go toward ice time bill)
  • Football - $90 (increase to offset protective equipment costs)
  • All Other High School Sports - $75 (increase to offset transportation, officials, supply and equipment costs)
  • Middle School Sports - $45 (Fees to Community Education)

Students on Free/Reduced lunch pay 1/3 participation fee - No Fee Waivers - Family maximum is $750

To ensure that all schools have adequate funding for athletics, 10% of full-pay, school-generated student participation fees will be distributed across the schools.

Data Collections

  • Consistent software for data collections starting in the 2018-19 school year.
  • RFP in development stage to potentially implement online registration
